Pros and cons of Hydroelectricity
As we know, Hydroelectricity is a great way of producing electricity powered by water. Some pros of this form of producing electricity are:- It's not expensive in the long run
- It can meet our energy demands
- It is renewable
- It is a consistent source of power
- The water used can also be used for irrigation
- Lack of suitable reservoirs
- Dammed hydroelectricity floods a huge area of land
- Costs a lot to build
- Relies on rainfall
- There is a risk of dam failure which would be catastrophic
Hydroelectricity Potential
Currently, Hydroelectric power accounts for around 1.2% of UK electricity generation (over the last year).According to the UK Government, Hydroelectricity does not have much more potential capacity in the UK - it is estimated to only produce 1-2% of our electricity in the coming years. This is largely due to suitable sites having already been developed for housing and businesses. Methods of Generation:
- Dams: Dammed water driving a turbine
- Pumped storage: Water transported between reservoirs at different heights
- Run of the river: Turbine driven by flowing water
- Tidal: Generating power from the rise and fall of the tide
